Fruit and veggie eaters! Pay attention to this one!
I really dislike when I have to throw produce away; I feel bad wasting food and I also feel like I’m throwing my money to the trash can. Fresh produce is every time more scarce, and the ever rising prices confirm this tendency. I must wisely calculate how much fresh food I’ll buy whenever I go to the supermarket, but unless I freeze those vegetables, making them lose some of their original freshness, I must throw away the spoiled remains or go back to the store at least another time so I can have fresh produce until the end of the week.
No more throwing away food and money like water dripping through a not-so-tiny hole. Good for the environment, good for your pocket and good for yourself.
Calculating how much fresh food to buy is tricky; somehow there always remains a bit more than you needed or you are lacking something. This either means an extra effort to go buy or order more or feeling guilty for wasting food and money. Actually, $600 USD are wasted annually in average per household by throwing spoiled fruits and veggies away. Besides this monetary consequence, there is a social and ecological one: we are everyday more people in the planet and food wasting is something we can’t afford anymore.
How can we avoid the hassle? Well, I stumbled upon this smart and simple solution that has been in the market for a few years now, so it has been tried and approved. Everywhere I’ve looked the ratings are fairly high. For instance, 4.5 out of 5 stars in Amazon and a great reception in the Grommet, where it was originally launched back in 2012.
So what is it and how does it work?
Blueapple, this simple, apple-shaped product, can reduce or even eliminate your food waste, allow you to buy larger portions at a time and save you a fair amount of money by extending the shelf life of your produce. What it basically does is absorb ethylene gas (C2H4), which is given off by fruit naturally to coordinate uniform ripening, but once it accumulates, it hastes spoilage. By reducing the concentration of ethylene, it extends by up to three times the shelf life of the produce around it.
It consists of an apple-shaped shell and a packet inside it, which is the absorbing agent. This packet contains sodium permanganate applied to a volcanic rock called zionite. Together they do the trick by oxidizing the ethylene into a harmless state. Each packet will last three months and then needs to be replaced.
I find this solution marvelous. With a very little, quickly amortized investment, one can actually get rid of a problem that is not ruining one’s life but that it’s always there. No more throwing away food and money like water dripping through a not-so-tiny hole. Good for the environment, good for your pocket and good for yourself.
