I am myself a long-time fan of outdoor barbecues. There was a time when I would gather with my friends in a city garden and enjoy a nice meal and a few cold beers at least once a week. Huge clouds of smoke rose from the grill for what seemed to be forever. The food was delicious, yes, but  I thought more than a few times about how harmful to the environment we were being and how horribly polluted would the air be if everyone did this all the time. And we were the first ones to breath those horrible smoke clouds the wind would push towards us. Our lungs didn’t feel the same and our clothes seriously smelled.

This led to some research. I found that, for example, the air at Highbury Fields park in London, one of the few city parks where fires are permitted, is now more polluted than the heavily transited city center; or that the Beijing authorities had to confiscate several hundred barbecue grills in an effort to reduce the rampant air pollution. And needless to say, exposing oneself often to charcoal smoke can have some serious health consequences. What are the alternatives? There are a few, like natural gas, electricity or even coconut shell charcoal, but still all of them pose some kind of threat, like the use of non-renewable resources and fire hazard.

Then I stumbled upon this wonderful solar cooker. Health risks? Nope. Environmental threats? Nope. Efficient? Yes.

This portable (3.4kg and foldable), nice piece of technology can heat up your food up to 550°F (290°C) even with low sunlight to bake, roast or steam a meal for two as fast as a regular grill would. There is more recent larger and stationary version that lets you cook larger portions and includes a few extra features such as a thermometer and a solar position indicator.

The price might be a bit elevated when compared to other traditional grills, but this extra cost will be easily amortized in the long run if we take supplies into account, besides not being harmful for oneself and the environment. It seems to work pretty well, as customers seem to be pretty happy: 4.5 stars on Amazon with more than 80 reviews. Looks like they are delivering as promised.
