Motorized, Rideable Luggage? Kudos to One of the Funnest Travel Ideas We’ve Seen Lately

This has got to be one of the most original ideas we’ve seen lately. It’s one of those inventions that immediately draw a smile on your face when you see them in action. Besides being actually very useful, this thing looks fun as hell.

Modobag, which is in a nutshell a segway-suitcase, is the brainchild of avid traveler and entrepreneur Kevin O’Donell from Chicago, USA. The idea struck him while pulling his children on his suitcase around in the airport, and along with his motorcyclist friend Boyd Burner, he developed this original piece to, in his own words, “make traveling more functional and fun”.

Who doesn’t imagine oneself cruising the airports in this segway-suitcase having fun like an eight-year old with his new power-wheels? I certainly do, and I can say it’s highly likely that you do too.

Modobag has a top speed of 8 mph, which is between three and four times our walking speed, and can carry people up to 260 lbs for a distance of 6 miles with a single charge, more than enough to move around a massive airport or train station more than twice. It’s size and shape (2000 cubic inches capacity) have been optimized to be spacious and accepted as hand luggage at the same time. It also has a dual usb charging dock. Though this would drain the battery and so the range of the “vehicle” would be compromised, this draining is not significant enough to affect the performance noticeably, as the high capacity battery can take this small bites like a champ.

Modobag is built with a lightweight aluminum chasis and a ballistic nylon exterior with YKK zippers. As of the date this article was published, the final weight of the product hadn’t been disclosed, but the prototypes shown and tested in airport stands don’t seem to be particularly heavy. And given the materials, durability shouldn’t be an issue either. We’ll have to wait and see how the final product fairs, but until now, it all seems to be going in the right direction.

Modobag has already raised multiple times it’s Indiegogo crowdfunding goal of $100,000 and pre-orders don’t seem to be slowing down. If you are interested in getting your own piece, click the link below and check the deals these guys are currently offering.
